View Full Version : Higgs Boson

Apparently the 'first glimpse' of the higgs boson particle.

There been kind of rumours that the higgs boson particle was going to be 'confirmed' in some way by the CERN scientists in an announcement they made today. I guess though, science doesn't often do things like that, and they basically said, so far as I can understand it, that it is very likely that they have probably seen some good evidence of it. Well, I'm really liking that they have at least said that much, even if they don't think they'll have anything fairly conclusive for perhaps another year.

I would genuinely quite like to know about the higges field stuff and if it can be proved. I haven't got my head around it enough to be able to put much faith in my own opinions of it (I don't think it's obvious) and so actual evidence of it would be like 'WOW, really, wow!'

Haha. Nice to think I'm not that thick, it's generally mind boggling for quite a few people then.Hell yeah. At the quantum level, some of this stuff is actually impossible to conceptualise. That's why scientists come up with analogies - because it's the only way that people can get a vague idea of what's going on. But no analogies really fit, because the physics is so fundamentally weird that there's simply nothing within our normal perceptions with which you can draw a comparison. :S

Check out wave duality theory if you want a great example of this! :hypno:

OH DEAR GOD WAVE PARTICLE DUALITY IS THAT CRAZY BUNCH OF CRAP (YAY)!
Have briefly been introduced to this by a bit in a Horizon program a while ago but didn't know what it was called or anything. Just some stuff about lines and dots and insane, oxymoronic, contadictory, opposing, nonsensicle, wonderful, brilliant madness. Well, really they just said it can be two things at once, which sounds like madness, but maybe it's just the terms wave and particle that are madness, not the behaviour of said things.

They've said they've glimpsed the higgs boson particle to distract everyone from how they broke physics by sending particles faster than light. :insane::p

Also, this popped up in my FB feed t'other day, so I'll leave it here:

A Higgs-Boson walks into a church, the priest says "We don't allow Higgs-Bosons in here.".
The Higgs-Boson says "But without me how can you have mass?"

RowanColourful
14-12--2011, 08:04 PM
Lol. :D

I reckon the worst they will have done is rush an anouncement when they could have left it till they had more certainty because of the attention of the faster than light. I don't care :D

Well, as any fule kno, you can't make a succesful infinite improbability drive with luke warm tea, its needs a strong brownian motion generator, viz, a really hot cup of tea!

Indeed, higgs boson it seems was in the nano second after the big bang, horizon did a programme on it last night, looks like they (the scientists) are very close to finding it, or not. What will it mean if they do ? Is it the magic glue that sticks all matter together and does that mean it could all be taken apart, something good may come of it one hopes.

What I still can't get my head around is why they think the Higgs should be there at all - the Standard Model in particle physics shows two nice groups of six particles each - six quarks and six leptons....why should nature allow the Higgs be there and spoil this nice even set of figures....unless of course there are another five waiting to be discovered in the Higgs group - this would fit together in a much nicer pattern.

But on the other hand I could well be talking out of my backside.....:insane:

But then on another hand the group of companies that I work for provides a lot of the equipment being used in these experiments including miles and miles of super conducting copper wire.

From what they say its the partical that gives everything mast then it goes away , in that case then why dosent everything then fall to bits again ,

Ps . God partical and someones bottom might come into it somewhere

RowanColourful
11-01--2012, 03:28 PM
Yeah I think I need to go back to this, when comprehension is only partial the information is not easilly retrieved from my memory in a straight line, but, as Jeff says people get a bit over the top and start calling it the God partical. It is something about, all the directions and everything work, witht the six somethings, and some other somethings which have a sense of pattern, but why do they have any mass whatsoever? Maybe there is a tiny thing which has the property of mass, or gives the property of mass, or so,ething like that. I do hope there is a readon mass is fundementally in a different set of ideas than the other things, I guess that is what the scientists researching it hope as well :)

Like... Make some damn sense world! ;)

science is a pain in the arse coz its only fact for the milli second it happens them someone else comes along and says its not that it this , super glue thats what it is , sticks stuff you know even particals

You gotta admit tho,is pretty dam fascinating isn't it! And all this discovery in our life time too......I just hope the search for a unified theory gets even more complicated, like one of them russian dolls...I can remember reading a story, about a Universe which created organic life to find out what it actually was......and when that organic did actually sort it out,the stars started to go out....

RowanColourful
11-01--2012, 05:21 PM
Oh what is that story, about the 'AC' which is someone's computer, and they make bigger and bigger ones and it just says stuff like 'entropy must increase'. Until the universe has changed totally and everyone's consciouseness has been absorbed into the galactic AC or the universal AC or the super mega massive one or something???

jeff

I dunno, shit just happens, if we see it as good that is just a perk of having human perception and enjoying it :).
was just going to put good - bad but that just sounded to negative , so if for every action there is a reaction , so where there is good there can also be bad , and in this day and age , bag normal means a better way of killing things if not us all , sometimes somethings are ment to be left alone , in reality they are pissing about with big bang stuff what if there is a big bang partical a god partical and it only needs one and what if they find it while there doing there science , look what happened with the atom , ha ha ha doom and gloom ......

From what I can gather from what little info picked up through tv the higgs boson is about the symmetry of matter and anti matter, the conclusions I've drawn is that symmetry is imperfect otherwise we would all look the same as would every flower and tree, there would be no mountains as the world would be a perfect circle.
So at the point of the big bang in that first second "a natural imbalance came into being" basically more matter than anti matter was released this is where the higgs boson is supposedly to have played its hand and its what scientists are looking for, maybe it will tell us why nothing is perfect in the world,
They seem to have it down to a very small scale and the next experiment in the collider will be overloaded with data that will leave no room for doubt as to what made the universe the way it is, or there is no higgs boson and its back to the drawing board and the head scratching begins for alot of well paid people.
Thats my tuppence worth.

Yep blame everthing on the net , the bit that gets me is when they do find this GOD partical , and thats the start of it all , then there is nothing to come , do they all shake hands and go home , or do they then turn it in to a weapon

RowanColourful
14-01--2012, 09:24 AM
Well, they are supposed to spend time finding out a bit more about how everything works, and then try to find away to use their new knowledge to do massive reactions with tiny things to release energy. But someone has probs just forgot to mention it being a great way to make universe destroyin bombs :/

Hilarious......but, in all fairness.....Police said Mr Cole, who was wearing a bow tie and rather too much tweed for his age, would not reveal his country of origin. "Countries do not exist where I am from. The discovery of the Higgs boson (http://crave.cnet.co.uk/gadgets/0,39029552,49304409,00.htm) led to limitless power, the elimination of poverty and Kit-Kats for everyone. It is a communist chocolate hellhole and I'm here to stop it ever happening."

Mmmm, Mr Cole sounds like a Tory on smack....unless the BBC have really got one of these :tardis:and you know WHO is real!:pp What I want to know is, is it all Kit-Kats or just the regular kind? Personally I'm all in favour of free Kit-Kats for everyone, and I firmly believe that we should have a dairy free gluten free variety too to make sure that we have a fully inclusive give away.
