Thesis:

That, in the modern world, folks live in a war of attrition to get their voice heard; always having to shout louder than someone else, and then meaning someone else then needs to shout louder than they in order to be heard in turn. That, also, this is found to correspond with food (and the need for MSG to "shout louder" than the quieter food - quieter both in tastes and in advertisments for) and with entertainment (always needing to get the biggest SFX or the most explicit sex or violence to get noticed above the din).

Yes there are small groups who turn aside (and go for say organic food and theatre rather than MSG filled processed food and surroundsound widescreen electronics) but I mean in general, in the western world.

Discuss? :D

Yup. Totally agree. The sensual nature of understated simplicity has been lost in the clamour of "bigger, faster, harder, louder". Just look at porn if you want an example of that. People have bloated and saturated themselves to the point where they need more and more stimulation to achieve any kind of satisfaction.

It is also related, I reckon, to the moral panic phenomenon; especially as regards the 24 hour news situation (made more so as they all compete with each other for viewers).

The question is; why do so many people buy into it?

Is it ignorance (they dont know any better), is it brainwashing (a deliberate process to programme people to prefer this stuff) or is it an inherent genetically dominated preference?

i totally agree, we live in a world or "bigger, better, faster, more". As for the 24 hr news, why do people buy into it? is it a need to feel part of something bigger or is it just 21st century gossip, do people really care or are they just nosey? In a world where it feels that you have to be the best or you are a failure, why do some people put so much imporance on having it all, whe really the majority of peole are apathetic to the simpilist things in life? Is it so that we live in a constant state to thrive or is it to undermine us and stamp out our will to be comfortable with what we have?..xx

We live in a world where we're told the unattainable is what will make us happy. But now the unattainable is getting easier and easier to get. Think having thousands of pounds will make you happy? Great! Get a loan! Still not happy? Buy that fancy car with your new money! So you've got a fancy car, but still millions of people aren't sleeping with you, right? Well get cosmetic surgery! Great, now you have massive tits/liposuction/a small nose! But, I bet you're still miserable....! A giant TV will make you complete! and on and on and on.

As Atomik said it's always "bigger, faster, harder, louder". We have entitlement problems - we think we SHOULD have things and that we DESERVE things, but it's not that simple because these 'things' never satisfy us the way we're told they will.

There are many false grails – each of which in turn professes to be the true grail, and offer you the power needed to make you feel secure. Catch is, so long as they see the world as hostile rather than home they will NEVER feel secure and thus always go from one “false grail” to the next (whether its widescreen TV, food, alcohol, work, relationships, a certain car, or makeup or plastic surgery, or hair colour or whatever) because the problem is not solved by changing the world, but by changing your mind about the world.

Leave my widescreen TV alone! :harhar:

"When people think you're dying they really listen... Instead of just waiting for their turn to speak."

Not really relavant, I know, but reading that bit made me think of it. Can't remember where the quote's from, though.

Products seem to be in a perpetual arms race style escalation.

New Improved Persil

One potential limiting factor is that the advertising people may run out of superlatives!

One recent example is Gillette's 5 blade razor to outgun Wilkinson Sword's 4 blade razor.

Who the fuck needs five blades in a razor? (or even 4 for that matter)

:insane:
