Freak Street in Kathmandu is long gone as a hippy hangout. Went downhill since they got rid of the hash and opium shops (not that I'm old enough to remember.

Goa was on the point of being proper commercialised 12 years ago...can't imagine it's much of a hippy hangout any more either.

    I agree with that one!

Goa has become a hot "normal" tourist destination, same with Koh Phangan in Thailand. No offence if there are any Russians on this site but the Russians have far more money to spend then your average hippy so has pushed the prices up and the hippies out.

Bhagsu is a good one its a few kilometers up from Mcleod Ganj where the Dalai Lama lives its a fabulous place, great energy, I spent a few months there a couple of years ago.

There are quite a few places in India were people meet up for months on end...for the nomads and hippies of this world, its a cheap destination and you can get a 6 month visa there (although they were starting to tighten the rules) Great for working the summer in europe and then off to a hot country for 6 months in the winter!!!

Agree with Mcleod Ganj and Bhagsu, very nice , only stayed there for about 5 days though , some really nice walking round there too.

The small island of Diu in Gujarat is quite a chuckle, to be honest the only place I have been in India that did not seem really cool was Ahmedabad

Lake Toba used to be a real hippy retreat, but something happened a few years back...flight companies decided Thailand would be more appealing. I would have loved to have been there in its hay day, its not quite the same now, lots of people trekking and passing through, but it is still an amazing place....an island in the middle of a volcano! You can get some interesting teas and shakes there too!

I was just wondering why no one had mentioned this obvious hippy retreat! Perhaps a little too hectic to be called a retreat, maybe an explosion...The Westcountry = one big hippy retreat!

The council were putting boulders in the road that is.. wouldn't be very hippy of them. A lot of that crew have headed to a different beach a bit more east actually but I can't remember the name, nice spot but a bit busy, not half as nice as burranco.

I live in a hippy hangout which is fairly new, being a haven for ex-travellers for about 18 years. We are in the Estrela mountains of central Portugal, having been chased almost to the Ocean by an over-populated and over-policed Europe.I'm not sure if I'm allowed to put up a website for a campsite here, opening in May

Links that are genuinely going to be of interest to many if us are fine, and if I ever make it to Portugal I'll look that one up

Hey, is it actually still a van hangout though or is it only a private paid campsite now? I'm heading down to south coast soon and looking for places to explore the coimbra area from on the way past. I know there's plenty of van spots and nice wwoof'ing farms around there, i'm qutie interested

    this place seems cool.

my favourite quote from this video is from the plantem (the town cannabis mascot) the quicker you learn how to plant 'em, you wont have to buy any from the dickhead over the road.

Nah it shut down ages ago. Grand Central opened and some people just call it Quiggins but its not the same, its just a smaller modern day Afflecks. Theres one very nice little hippie shop that sells all homemade clothing and bags and such run by a young girl, theres a headshop with a very interesting old war vet called Pat (I mostly go just to pass some time chatting with him) and a cool secondhand cassette/vinyl store thats pretty cheap. But besides those three stores, its mostly designer mosher/scene type wear, and every time I go its pretty empty...never really see hippies there.

Hey Lynex, you mentioned a May opening with this place. I was wondering how things were coming along?
