    Recommended Repairers / Suppliers

The title says it all really Somewhere to list reliable vehicle repairers/suppliers etc to save us getting ripped off.

The garage I use is based in Gloucester. This is the guy who stayed open for me one saturday until the AA had recovered me there and then worked for 2 hours on my beloved Olyvia so I could get to the gathering. He also looks after my precious little car

Just a couple of notes before we proceed:

    1. Having someone recommend a supplier or repairer doesn't make it an official endorsement - it just means they've personally had a good experience. If you need more clarification speak to the person posting the recommendation.
    2. Please refrain from giving bad reviews or slating any service where you've had issues - this is to protect the website from any issues concerning libel etc.

    OK, as you were

    can i recommend myself?
i am not a what the system calls a qualified mechanic but i used to work in a garage.
ive had a couple of vans,a vw (petrol) which i removed the engine fully rebuilt it and refitted it on my own.outside my home at the time.
also a vw lt35 6 cylinder diesel which i replaced the head gasket and associated parts when doing a job like this(timing belt, injectors, pump etc.i do all my own repairs, servicing on the vehicles i have owned and ive had a few.i have a renault master at the mo which i look after.
anyhow what i am trying to say is i am what you would call a diy mechanic.
so if anyone wants a job doing and are in the area(lancashire) i would be able to help out at least half the price of a garage.
one of the main things i find with old vans is they allways need welding and used to pay someone else to do this for me,but after spending £350 on welding for the last mot, i have now bought a welder and i am teaching myself to weld.

I don't reckon there's owt wrong with a bit of self promotion house of payne... I was just considering doing the same actually... then I realised I have far too many projects of my own on the go to be advertising my services to anyone else!

Couldn't help but notice your location... a friend of mine from your neck of the woods has just been let down by her welder a couple of weeks before MOT time and is desperately looking for someone to help her out... depending on how it's going with the welding I was thinking it might be worth putting you in touch... save her a few quid and give you a bit of practice?

Unfortunately don't think I can PM you (or if I do you can't reply) until you've posted a bit more... but let me know if you're likely to be up for that

i have got spare time on my hands at the moment as i was made redundent.so could do with some extra money but more important to me i would like to help out people who live the alternative lifestyle.
i would be up for it,but i have just started practicing on bits of scrap metal and also i havnt bought a surge protector yet,(a piece of kit to protect the electrics, electronics of a vehicle)and it sounds like your friend is in a hurry.but if they can wait i would say about a week then let me know.
do you know how many post before i can pm.
also i would like to ad that my van is equipped with all my tools ,so could travel locally, for fuel costs.

I'm the same, have been repairing, restoring, modifying, tuning and building cars/bikes and vans since I was 16, can do pretty much anything on older motors and most things on newer stuff.

Once i get mobile in the van I'll be carrying the tools and welder along with me (mainly to look after my own truck!) but a few jobs here and there for other people wont hurt although I'm not looking to make a career out of it.

I think we need a clean up already ...

If people are going to contribute to this thread then it's best if it's not turned into a discussion - or it'll confuse the issue and give too much for people to sift through. I think for the purppose of this topic the following will probably suffice

    Garage Name

What they do ... for instance, do they have a ramp that can take a truck?

Location (the more detail the better)
    Phone number

Brief review - reason you'd recommend them.

    Eco Vans Bristol

Often have really hard to get hold of parts for older vans. Based in Bristol but do postal service.

Anyone in the Bournemouth area had experience with Renault tragic t1300 on 89 . would be so grateful for a touch of guidance to finding spares and a happy mechanic who won't rip me off my hard earned camping money x

Try London Auto Parts - http://www.londonautoparts.co.uk/ - my friend had a similar Trafic a few months ago and got some parts from there. Other than that look up Fittapart - they are round my way, but seem to have all sorts of parts in their warehouse, often quite obscure stuff... and they deliver from what I know

I fully endorse Swains Commercials in pencader, near Carmarthen, I used to work with the founder who is a mechanical genius, NOT a "fitter". Tony.

Dear DaisyDreamer, what a great idea of yours.

    My heroes are:
M and B Diesels, Unit 3, The Aercon Building, Woodside Road, Boyatt Wood, Eastleigh, SO50 4ET 02380 619655 2 mins off the M3 at J13, midway between Winchester and Southampton.
    Website: http://www.mbfuel.co.uk/
M&B were recommended to me by my wonderful garage Oak Motors (run by David Hosegood) in Eastleigh, Hampshire. Honest, straight-dealing and just bloody wonderful people to deal with.
Briefly, my Ford Transit 2.0 turbo diesel home broke down with fuel starvation (none getting through). The AA man, the tow truck men and the engineer at M&B all suspected an astronomically expensive broken pump, and the M&B engineer Micky warned me of a bill approaching £1000, possibly more.
They were booked up for nearly three weeks, but once I explained my predicament they very kindly agreed to go ahead early the next morning. I meanwhile begged the bank to extend my horrible overdraft to pay for the anticipated £1000 repair bill.
Micky at M&B phoned after 4 hours to tell me the pump was FINE and that it was some other problem with the filter, which they replaced along with other bits, and the charge? £280, not £1000. They could have done what they wanted and charged the £1000 and I wouldn't have known, but they don't do things like that and are consequently very busy. This is the third time they've helped me out of a crisis and I wholeheartedly recommend them to you for any diesel fuel problems. They have facilities like an operating theatre, and are immensely experienced, but just refuse to rip you off. Dave.
Not a shred of evidence exists in favor of the idea that life is meant to be serious.

    Garage Name - M&W Autos

What they do ... for instance, do they have a ramp that can take a truck?
Specialise in French vehicles (Citroën, Renault and Peugeot), but they will undertake most mechanical and electrical jobs. They don't do bodywork. Only a small, family run garage and they looked after my Merc Sprinter. Not sure they could lift anything larger.

Location (the more detail the better)
    Lords Lane, Wisbech, Cambs
    Phone number -
    01945 410746 http://www.mwautos.co.uk

Brief review - reason you'd recommend them -
I have no hesitation in recommending them. They have done work on my cars and vans for years. They always do what they say they have done, they know their vehicles, they charge very reasonably and have never tried to do unnecessary work. They will repair rather than replace if they can. Lovely people too.

We use chard caravan and motorhome solutions, very happy with them, didn't do some work in the van as he said it didn't need it, try doing that with another garage and they would find work that didn't need doing , Halford auto services to name one.
