suicide itself isn't illegal but assisting someone to commit suicide is.

I heard this mentioned on a radio phone in a while back , person was complaining that the beeb consistently use the phrase ' commited suicide' as you rightly say suicide was decriminalised a long time ago so nothing was 'committed' in terms of a criminal offence, proper terminology nowadays is ' death by suicide' , although 'took their own life' is also popular .

I think if someone has had enough of life we should give them a pill and let them get on with it.

When the quality of life is gone, and only suffering remains, I'm checking out....It's not that hard to do.

It's a sad situation that humans have allowed governments to be the arbitrers of whether or not you can opt out of life.
If assistance is needed and that assistant can prove good intention then let it be. In these modern times a video log is easy enough. If no proof of desire then prosecute and secure a conviction with a jury.
Sure some will slip through the net but that is so in all walks of life.
