CCTV to be installed in all UK abattoirs

"Under rules being phased in over the next year, Food Standards Agency vets will be able to ask to see footage of all areas where livestock are held.
Slaughterhouses found to be failing welfare standards could face a criminal investigation or lose staff licences.

Michael Gove has said that this will make the UK a "Global leader in animal welfare."

It should be live streaming for everyone to see at all times.

In all honesty it's just another attempt to find the "right" way to do the wrong thing.

The meat industry is too big and too powerful to agree to live streaming for public viewing! God forbid someone sees something that stirs their conscience and changes their eating habits.

There's going to be a few that would prefer that 'killing channel' to Jeremy Kyle. I think the TV licence payers would have plenty to say about animal snuff 'hell-y- vision.

I guess it's a good thing but what worries me about these minor improvements in animal welfare is that people then sit back and feel justified in their dietary choices. The animals might not get kicked or beaten in the last few moments of their lives, but the majority of them have had a horrendous life up until that point and putting cctv in abattoirs doesn't make that okay.
