Trump minions hold "Unite the right" rally in Charlottesville Va

Trump blames both sides for the hate. But only one side is promoting white supremacy, the KKK and Neo-Naizis. This is the biggest Nazi rally in America since WWII. And there is only one bigot to blame....the one in the White House.

The Republican party can not get away with supporting this bigot any more. It is the Ku Klux Klan and the Nazis and the Aryan Nation that has brought Trump to power. Without their votes, Trump would not be in the White House.

Trump has brought the Civil War back to America.

Trump's statement and reaction to this incident beggars belief. By not condemning one side he is pretty much giving the far right a mandate to do what they want! What were his words again?

The thing is, taking down a statue of REL is airbrushing history and in so many ways you have to let history stand. That's what history is there for

My oldest and best friend Steve lives in rural South Carolina and he's a biker. So unlike many on here I have drunk with these guys. They are pretty easy to spot. The best way to deal with their brand of small town retro redneck beliefs is to let them talk. They will bury themselves without you having to lift a finger.

The confederacy, like the Nazis lost the war. They should not be allowed to glorify white supremacy with statues or flags of hate. If I'm not mistaken, it's illegal in Germany to fly the Nazi flag, and all nazi statues were torn down. Criminals that commit murder should not be allowed to go free....as a result the USA has had a continuing Civil War for over 150 years. And now Trump is ramping it up again. Like the KKK and nazis, Trump must go.

The American Civil War was not fought over slavery, it was fought over money. Spookily similar to us wanting to leave the EU, the Carolinas felt they were being ripped off and wanted out.

The promise to free the slaves was made by Lincoln later in the war and it was tactical. With all the white men of fighting age away he hoped the promise would cause the black slaves in the South to feel empowered to rise up in a rebellion that would destabilise the Confederacy and divert troops back to supress it.

Lincoln and the Union never gave a fuck about the slaves. In a letter to Horace Greeley on August 22 1862 ( Greeley was the editor of the New York Tribune) Lincoln wrote, If I could have saved the Union without freeing the slaves I would have done it.

The Civil War turned some of the richest States into some of the poorest. Many of the wealthy plantations never restarted and the cotton industry was wiped out. Many states today like Alabama today are still blighted and will never recover. The cost to the US has been immense.

But surely in free country, you should be able to say what you think and fly what ever flag you like?

Trump Karma is tearing up the U.S......hurricane Harvey tore up half of Texas, they'll be recovering for the next ten years....cost $180 billion.....Irma is about to ear up all of Florida, and some of Georgia and South Carolina, cost twice as much as Texas....fires are burning up the west, all over Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana.....140 earthquakes have hit Wyoming in the last few days, many more in Idaho....Yellowstone is a super volcano, it it goes off kiss the U.S. goodbye....Trump is starting a trade war with Canada, Mexico and China, which ill destroy the U.S. economy.....China is getting prepared to take over the global economy, and the U.S. won't be allowed to participate until it pays China the trillion dollars it owes them. Trump's treatment of Muslims and Mexicans is the cause for these disasters, in my opinion. But any right winger will say that Karma is "fake news", doesn't have anything to do with climate change or consequences. Trump is proof beyond any doubt that the U.S. is the dumbest country on the planet. Should I stay or should I go?

Trump is the best thing that happened to the world, really! He will finally kill the dollar and therefore US global domination. The US have more debt than the rest of the world altogether. What keeps the US alive is not their army (Russia and China have a bigger army and more weapons than the Yanks and could annihilate them in 15 minutes), but the fact that the dollar is the official reserve currency for all commoodity transactions (gold, silver, oil, coffee, you name it!). Trump has already discredited the dollar, so much that the IMF has plans to replace the dollar with special drawing rights as reserve currency (google IMF SDR if you donít believe me).

That's just not true that China and Russia have greater millitary capabilities , the US spends far more on defense than anyone else, have more aircraft carriers , far more planes , have much more cutting edge technology , a large well trained human force and the world's largest nukiller arsenal.

Surely he will be impeached at some point, his election has shown the electoral college needs reform, he didn't get the most votes.

Cheer up Gophanger. You're right in a lot that you say, but you can't just look at the bad stuff.

[As background, I lived in Connecticut for ten years - we have relatives in South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Virginia - they're all around the south. I remember one cousin saying he'd been to a KKK meeting - NOT as a sympathiser. He wanted to know what it was like - I'd be chillingly interested too. I remember the long drive down to see them in SC and approaching the border - all those signs: south of the border 900 miles to go, 600 miles, 200 . . . are they still there? We loved them. And then we got to the border bit, early hours of the morning, loads of firecrackers for sale, people wandering around, I remember a guy peeing on the side of the road, it was all a bit seedy. I love the South, the Spanish moss, the coast, there are some lovely, warm, friendly people there. Yes, obviously racism is a problem. On the way back we'd stop off at Virginia, where another cousin lives, we'd buy a salted ham. All fond memories. The actual countryside is glorious.]

The US is HUGE. The Western coast is a trip. I've never been to Alaska, but would love too. And New England, where I lived - I loved it. I've only been back to the US twice. I’ve heard comments like a lot of our friends have gone all religious, blah blah blah. But you have to come back to the point that the US is HUGE. It's all sorts of things thrown together. The politics and the individual people are totally different things. Of course you know the US isn't the dumbest country on the planet. I often group things like that, saying America is this, China or Korea is that, but then know the limitations as I say those things.

I remember first hearing Trump was running for presidency a year before the vote - I thought it was hilarious, no chance etc. I wanted Bernie in (I heard Susan Sarandon say good things about him and that she wouldn’t vote for Hilary), but as he didn't run I wanted Hilary. I felt a bit sorry for her,
which was foolish, I think actually the democrats needed to dust off that mirror they'd thrown away ages ago. I thought she'd worked hard (but ‘fought’ is probably more correct and the reason why perhaps she didn't deserve the role) for decades and it was an injustice she didn't get voted in, she was a qualified politician (Trump isn't even an honest businessman!). I saw the Michael Moore documentary on Hilary, which was good, but perhaps his sentimentalism was at the heart of what was wrong with the democratic parties lack of dealing with the way the Establishment had grown into a Sentinel of Ignorance to the impoverished.

Why for instance do you have to call a health plan ObamaCare - would Mr Obama be supplying the care personally to everybody? [Imortalising a name continues the idea that state and it’s representatives are separate / higher than the individuals.] I saw there were a lot of black people who felt betrayed by the 8-years (!) of Obama. (Of course, change takes time.) When I looked into the history of the wall: 'Trump's Wall', I discovered, of that border, a third was created by the Rio Grande, another third by an existing wall (double wall, no-man-zone with barbed wire, helicopters etc) and that only a third has no border. There are movies about people traveling from South America and then being hunted down by ‘farmers’ (shot dead) in the border lands of Texas. Apparently Obama is the one who policed the ‘Wall’ at its most severe. I never understood this repeated lie about ‘Trump’s Wall’. It’s America’s Wall until the whole issue is dealt with. If you got rid of Mexicans you wouldn’t have cleaners.

Sorry, that’s a tangent (you need to be able to rely on facts regardless of party politics – it’s not a case of black V white). But I mention it because ultimately (and it is very easy for me to say, not living there), I think it’s good that Trump got in. It proved a deep mistrust in the State (that even now I don’t think Hilary confronts?), issues of worsening racism (that was getting increasingly militant during Obama!), that thousands of people are desperate for an ordinary job in Middle America, so of course they get bitter . . . The idea of change through the revolution of ideas is viciously at work here – you can’t (always) continue to have the same thing all the time. To ignore the problems would be perilous. So, unfortunately the current moment in US history is a Big Vomit of ideas and actions.

It could all fail, the US might turn into a dictatorship. Trump could continue (it’s as possible as him becoming president), he could win the next election, and in that term, he could form a triple alliance with Russia and China. Who knows, Trump is fickle, as long as he’s winning, he doesn’t really care what game he plays.

I would hope for a different outcome. Bernie’s good. I also recently saw Al Gore speaking and the way things are going a path is being made for him, there are some sound possibilities, there is still a lot which is positive in the US, it’s fabulous. Despite the Tump hiccup, most people still see the US as a great place.
[Sorry, this didn’t turn out at all as I intended.] For now, stay put – America needs you.

Gophangover - I meant to mention, regarding your comment about Germany and their swastika flag policy. I worked in publishing, doing covers for books, and I was told not to have a swastika on a book cover if we wanted to sell the book in Germany. In both France and Germany (and I think some other European countries . . .) use of the swastika is illegal for many things (unless making a film / documentary for instance), I don't know the exact limits. Germany has also taken a bold move with Scientology - it's banned in Germany.

People go on about freedom of expression, but when the expression is of hatred, or inciting hatred, then it's good that the law helps.

Now Trump is demanding loyalty to the flag....that's what Hitler did. Trump claims that anyone that doesn't stand for the national anthem in the NFL should be fired. The flag represents the genocide committed on the Native Americans, killing over 50 million and stealing their land. No different than the nazi flag that represented the genocide of the Jews.

Trump said that anyone that doesn't live up to his expectations are SOB's.
