Depends on what you use your laptop for, if it's for searching the Internet and the very odd word document have you thought of a tablet with a Bluetooth keyboard? Also there is plenty of 2 in 1 / hybrid laptops on the market.

I haven't had a computer in years,I recently bought a CCTV system that has remote phone access but by the looks of it needs software in a computer to setup plus photos/SD cards etc and I've almost forgotten how to use one so I'm thinking I should sort that out.

I insist: a 2nd hand Thinkpad x220 with 8GB RAM is the way to go.
