I'm in the process of makin a wood burner for back of my van out of an old calor gas bottle. I've seen it done before with a scaffoldin pole for chimney. I wondered he this might be bit narrow for draw! Anybody done owt like this?

That does sound a bit narrow, but it depends on whether or not you're going to be able to rig a grille system on the bottom of the bottle. Never tried that before admittedly, I've used steel drums and also restored some old stoves I've found at restoration/resalvage places.
here's some pix of one i built, it didn't draw very well with 6' of 3" chimney, 4" works ok tho.

I don't know if a scaffolding pipe would give sufficient draw but these guys talk about using 3" exhaust pipes and 6" pipes. They also talk about fitting a damper to stop too much heat going up the chimney. anyway, I'm here to learn, too.

I took the easy way out having got fed up with the pot belly due to the size of twigs you could feed it..so I bought this..just fitted it and..yay..yum,yum

one flap wheel on the grinder, a bit of wire and gas from the mig, a surprisingly small amount of leccy, about £5 all in....
we bought a gas bottle burner for 47 pounds! (just over 2 years ago) from a guy in glastonbury

sorry no advice on making one but i think a few people on here have burners by him, dready sam i think just got one for her van...

That looks like a bargain, windy smithy charge £140 for a similar one. The windy one is 6mm plate though, which makes a big difference.
Yawn I'm so tired with this big bag of coal on my head...
